Intellectual Property Rights: How To Protect Your Business

In this interview, I discuss how to protect your business with intellectual property rights expert Lauren V. Perez, President of LVP Solutions™.

Lauren has over 20 years’ experience working to protect intellectual property rights (IPR) and facilitate free trade in branded goods.

For nearly 14 years, Lauren worked with Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A., an international law firm with a focus on international trade and customs, overseeing both its IPR and Regulatory Affairs practice areas, serving as both a Principal and Vice President.

In her career Lauren has managed the IP portfolio of the World Wrestling Federation, taught IPR at university level, protected the IP rights of Barney the Purple Dinosaur and many more businesses.

She’s also given evidence to the U.S. Congress and other federal agencies on IPR issues.

In this interview, we discuss

  • What is meant by “Intellectual Property Rights”?
  • Why is protecting trademarks or copyrights important for small businesses in particular?
  • How do you know whether or not you are infringing upon someone else’s IPR?  And what are the potential penalties if you do?
  • Are there any particular issues relevant to these  ecommerce businesses specifically?
  • How does IPR affect businesses that might be selling or buying goods internationally?
  • What are the costs involved both in protecting your own rights and making sure you don’t infringe upon others?  And are there any strategies for streamlining or managing these costs?
  • Where should businesses go or look to take the first steps?

This is scary stuff but it’s information you need to be aware of to stop you either accidentally infringing others’ intellectual property rights or having your valuable brand assets stolen or abused.
